Leadership Characteristics
Integrity - doing the right thing, even when it is difficult or inconvenient
Accountability - owning outcomes, not passing blame, and being ok with making a mistake
Problem solving - finding solutions and staying calm when things are going sideways
Leadership Challenges
Managing different priorities and personalities and navigating organizational politics have been my biggest challenges, but also my biggest accomplishments. TPRM is unique in that it touches every corner of your business operations, and every corner of your risk and compliance framework. Being able to navigate through all of those competing priorities while maintaining the framework of TPRM requirements is not easy and takes intention and perseverance. In my career I have been a part of teams that have built, implemented, and/or improved TPRM programs in environments where there has not always been the necessary top-down support, so creating or driving that support both up and down the organization is a key driver for success.
Key Take-a-ways
Keep your perspective. At the end of the day, we are not saving lives here. It may seem like things are going sideways at times, but keeping a calm head will instill and inspire confidence in you and those around you.
Sleeping well at night is important. I got this one from one of my leaders. If you can sleep at night, then you can feel pretty confident that you are doing the right thing.
Everyone has positive intentions. If you remember that that is what drives most people in the workplace, then it becomes easier to navigate different or difficult personalities.
Fun Fact
Aside from TPRM some things I am passionate about include: cooking, cruises, Disney World, reality television, romance novels, and New Kids on the Block. :)
